gregory kam leung so
Gregory Kam Leung So went home to his Heavenly Father on 13 December 2025 at the age of 67. He was a beloved husband, father and grandfather, dedicated public servant of Hong Kong and faithful servant of Christ.
Born in Hong Kong in 1958 to Ng Mo Lin and the late So Ho Ming, he emmigrated to Ottawa, Canada at age 15, where upon enrolling at Laurentian High School, he met the love of his life, Chris (nee Foo). They married in 1982 and together raised three children Carolyn (Jon), B.J. (Heather) and Megan (Joe).
Following undergraduate and graduate studies at the University of Ottawa, he began practising law at Goodmans LLP. His legal career brought him and his young family back to Hong Kong, where he later started his own law firm, So, Lung & Associates.
Greg’s love for Hong Kong and passion for service, community, and leadership eventually led him to roles in public office. After serving as Under Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development from 2008 to 2011, he was appointed as Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development, where for six years he oversaw a broad portfolio of economic advancement initiatives and championed Hong Kong’s trade interests on a global scale. During his tenure, he introduced and helped to pass the Competition Ordinance - the first comprehensive legislative framework of its kind in Hong Kong. In 2012, Greg was honoured with the Gold Bauhinia Star for his public service.
Upon retirement from politics, he served as an independent non-executive board director for companies including China Overseas Group, Investcorp, Orient Overseas (International) Limited and Shui On Land Limited.
Greg’s commitment to service and community extended well beyond his career. He delighted in serving Christ through discipleship and helping others grow in their faith. Over the years, he and Chris opened their home to hundreds of fellow Christians and non-believers alike, sharing the good news of Jesus Christ through Bible studies and prayer meetings. Greg was also a gifted musician, and could frequently be found on the piano or guitar, leading songs of praise both at home and at church.
Despite a busy public and church life, Greg always prioritised family. One of his greatest joys was spending time with his ten grandchildren: Caitlin, Annabelle, Emily, Jenna, James, Maddie, Dillon, Leora, Charlie and Caleb. Be it trips to Ocean Park, walks along Bowen Path or ice cream treats right before dinner, he cherished his self designated role as 爷爷 to all his grandchildren. His family is comforted that he forever joins his dear granddaughter Emily in heaven. Greg will be deeply missed and always fondly remembered.
The So family would like to express their heartfelt thanks to Dr Julian Han Xinguang and the team at Singapore General Hospital for the kindness, compassion, and exceptional care provided to Greg during his final weeks of life.
Greg was a firm believer in the value of charitable giving and for many years supported the Home of Loving Faithfulness and its mission of caring for those with intellectual and physical disabilities. In lieu of flowers, donations in Greg’s memory should be made to the Home of Loving Faithfulness.
